Seeking Redemption: “Outside In” (2017)

Streaming on Netflix

I was clicking around the Direct TV program guide on Saturday and, as usual, found nothing that appealed to me.  During the week I’m content with my streaming TV series, but on the weekends, I prefer to settle into the long form. Those who know me, understand that I’m not a fan of horror, comic book or even sci-fi adaptations. I’d rather soak up a good drama or comedy. Very hard to find these days. But this week I got lucky.

Outside In, (2017) directed by Lynn Shelton, is an emotionally charged film that delves into the complexities of human connection, second chances, and the pursuit of redemption. It is a deliberately paced movie, to be sure.  But it kept me engaged from beginning to end.

The story revolves around Carol (Edie Falco), a high school teacher, and Chris (Jay Duplass), a former student recently released from a 20-year prison sentence for a crime he maintains he didn’t commit. Carol, we learn, is chiefly responsible for obtaining Chris’s release. As these two reconnect, the film also delves into the life of Hilda, Carol’s daughter (Kaitlyn Dever,) who is navigating her own struggles and aspirations.

Falco is magnificent, as always. We, as the audience, feel the depth of her pain and frustration as she is torn between loyalty to her family and the charge of her connection with Chris.

Duplass’ quiet approach to his character seems contrary to what we might expect from a man who has spent 20 years in prison. However, his softly wrenching performance shows, without a doubt, the damage that has been done.

Dever’s ability is quite apparent as she skillfully convey’s Hilda’s mix of resentment, empathy, and yearning. Her scenes with Edie Falco are particularly compelling, showcasing the often complicated and strained relationship between a mother and daughter.

In one of the film’s most poignant scenes, Hilda confronts her mother about the attention Carol is giving Chris. It accentuates the hurtful gap that has developed between Hilda and her Mom. It is a tour de force for the two exceptional actors, delivering restrained emotion, deep vulnerabilities and a longing for a deeper connection.

The late Lynn Shelton’s direction is calculated and on-target. The chemistry between Falco, Duplass and Dever creates a trio of performances that elevates the film to a higher level of emotional resonance. Shelton was a talented filmmaker, taken far too soon.

Outside In is a poignant and introspective drama that showcases the remarkable talents of the cast. It’s a film that reminds us of the power of human connection and the transformative nature of forgiveness.  So, if you find yourself stuck on a Saturday…Outside In, might be just the ticket.

I recently retired after a 34 year career in public education. I was a teacher, supervisor, and administrator. Essentially, I enjoyed it all. The nonsense surrounding NCLB basically drove me to the edge...a good intention gone terribly wrong. In addition, I'm a founder (along with my late wife, Carolyn) of the Country Gate Playhouse community theatre in Belvidere, New Jersey. In recent years I've dabbled in writing interactive dinner theatre plays. I have also written a play called "Jersey Diner" as well as a youth oriented musical adaptation of "Tom Sawyer". Since "retiring" I'm an adjunct at our local community college. I also serve as a New Jersey school district education consultant.
