I recently revisited Arthur, the 1981 film written and directed by Steve Gordon and starring Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli and John Gielgud.
I recall quite fondly that I truly enjoyed the movie in its day. And now, I can vouch, without hesitation, for its durability. In fact, it is clear to me that Arthur is a modern classic which will endure for many generations.
The film tells the story of Arthur Bach, a wealthy and alcoholic playboy who is forced to choose between marrying the woman his family has picked for him or losing his inheritance.

Dudley Moore shines in the lead role of Arthur, delivering a performance that is both hilarious and heartfelt. His witty one-liners and hilarious antics keep the audience laughing throughout the film, while his genuine love for Linda (played by Liza Minnelli) make him a sympathetic and relatable character.

Throughout much of the film, the Moore character is hopelessly intoxicated. I must say that such a portrayal would usually not be appealing to me. I would normally find such a character to be tedious and annoying. But, Mr. Moore’s performance is both hilarious and touching. Through his drunken haze, roars a sad vulnerability that is extremely appealing. And his laugh….it’s as intoxicating as his purportedly consumed alcohol.

The chemistry between Moore and Minnelli is also a standout aspect of the film. Their unlikely romance is sweet and charming, and their scenes together are some of the film’s most memorable.

But the real star of Arthur is John Gielgud in his role as Hobson, Arthur’s sarcastic and sharp-tongued butler. Gielgud’s impeccable timing and delivery of his lines make every scene he’s in a joy to watch, and his on-screen dynamic with Moore is a highlight of the film.
Another appealing aspect of the film is its title song. Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do,) written and performed by Christopher Cross, compliments the movie and contributes effective emotional style.
Overall, Arthur is a classic comedy that has stood the test of time. Its witty writing, stellar performances, and heartwarming story make it a must-watch for fans of the genre. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat.
